Fido Skilled Volunteering

What is Fido Skilled Volunteering?
Fido Skilled Volunteering connects not-for-profit organisations looking to recruit volunteers for short-term or long-term positions with skilled, experienced volunteers.

Fido Skilled Volunteering has three simultaneous ways of advertising skilled volunteer positions:

  1. Advertised in The Sydney Morning Herald’s Help Desk column on the inside back page of the News Review section on Saturdays and on the inside back page of the main news section on Mondays. Help Desk advertises five volunteer positions every Monday and three on Saturdays.
  2. Published on the Fido website's current volunteer jobs every Monday.
  3. Emailed to volunteers every Monday in the Fido volunteer jobs e-bulletin.

Who can use Fido?
From 1 July 2006, organisations using Fido will need to be members of The Centre for Volunteering. Find out more about the wide variety of benefits and services available to members of The Centre at www.volunteering.com.au you may be surprised at how little it costs to be a member.

What types of volunteer jobs can I advertise on Fido?
At Fido we focus on volunteer jobs that are:

Professional volunteer jobs
Professional volunteer jobs require a university degree and/or recognised professional qualification and include medical practitioners, lawyers, accountants, auditors, teachers, nurses etc.

Senior management volunteer jobs
Senior management jobs require senior management experience in the private and/or public sectors. They include (but not limited to) board members, directors, partners, principles, senior managers, management consultants etc.

Technical or trade volunteer jobs
These jobs require either a recognised trade qualification such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanic etc or other technical or trade positions requiring training and experience, including IT (i.e. non university degree).

Specialist volunteer jobs
This category covers other jobs requiring a qualification or special experience or training including language tutors, sporting coaches, music teachers etc.

Specialist jobs may also include jobs which do not require a qualification, but may require special personal attributes or experience.

Urgent or critical volunteer jobs
Urgent or critical jobs are those which are essential to the successful functioning of an organisation or event.

Unique, interesting, or unusual volunteer jobs
Unique, interesting, or unusual volunteer jobs have included overseas jobs (eg in developing countries) which will benefit the local community. They are unusual or different by nature. These jobs are of great value to our target audience of The Sydney Morning Herald and have always been very successful.

What jobs aren't suitable for Fido?
Fido is not always able to advertise all the requests for positions it receives. However, any position can be advertised through The Centre for Volunteering's volunteer referral service which advertises jobs on The Centre's website, Seek Volunteer and GoVolunteer. As people express interest in your job our referral service interviews them and identifies suitable volunteers who we refer onto your organisation.
